Transforming a former garage/studio into a beautiful family home | Riverdale Road, Sheffield
This ‘LABC Building Excellence 2015’ Award Winning building is set within the grounds of 73 Riverdale Road. The existing use of the building proposal was a home-office/ gym annex occupied by a steel frame that was constructed in 2001. Our client had purchased this property with a view to convert it into a compact, contemporary dwelling.
Our client aspired to produce a design solution that would look to re-vitalise the property and allow an extension to cater for the extra space required and restore an existing out building, which was sympathetic to the character of the Ranmoor conservation area but would provide a contemporary internal living space for a family of 3.
The client was passionate to renovate the exterior of the existing building to a high quality that was true to its existing palate of materials. Re-claimed stone was used, cleaned and rebuilt to give the principle elevation a new look. A new skin of white render wraps the building with a significant castellated cedar box that features on the rear elevation.
The dwelling now consists of a large open planned kitchen, dining and living space to reflect the buildings modern way of living. The ground floor also provides a separate utility room and a w/c. The stair case has been relocated to the centre of the building creating a more functional space allowing full height units as well as a double worktop island in the space.
One of the contemporary features on this building is the cedar ‘box’ that projects off the master bedroom. This creates a large viewing space that provides excellent solar gains, flooding large amounts of natural light deep into the room as well as creating a luxury bespoke statement.
